'Probable Minister of Legislation' Lee Wankyu Resigns as Representative in 'Yoon Seok-yeol Disciplinary Cancellation Lawsuit'
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] Lawyer Lee Wankyu (61, Judicial Research and Training Institute class 23), who is considered a strong candidate for the position of Commissioner of the Ministry of Government Legislation, has resigned as the legal representative in the 'disciplinary appeal administrative lawsuit' regarding the two-month suspension penalty that President Yoon Seok-yeol received from the Ministry of Justice when he was Prosecutor General.
According to the court on the 10th, Lawyer Lee submitted a letter of resignation as legal representative yesterday to the appellate court presiding over President Yoon's lawsuit to cancel the disciplinary action, the Seoul High Court Administrative Division 1-1 (Presiding Judges Shim Junbo, Kim Jongho, Lee Seunghan).
Lawyer Lee had been representing President Yoon in the disciplinary appeal lawsuit along with Lawyers Son Kyung-sik (60, class 24) and Lee Seok-woong (63, class 14). Previously, former Minister of Justice Chu Mi-ae excluded then-Prosecutor General Yoon from his duties in November 2020 and held a disciplinary committee in December of the same year, issuing a two-month suspension penalty.
The disciplinary reasons presented by the Ministry of Justice at the time were ▲the creation and distribution of documents alleging surveillance of major case trial panels ▲obstruction of inspection and investigation related to the 'Channel A case' ▲damage to the dignity and reputation of prosecutors due to political neutrality violations. The first trial dismissed President Yoon's claim, stating that "the Ministry of Justice's disciplinary procedure was lawful."

Lawyer Lee is a classmate of President Yoon from Seoul National University Law School, class of 1979, and is reportedly being discussed as a strong candidate for the vice-ministerial level position of Commissioner of the Ministry of Government Legislation in the current administration. The Ministry of Government Legislation is the agency responsible for legal interpretation within the executive branch. Lawyer Lee has criticized the so-called 'Geomsu Wanbak' (complete removal of prosecutorial investigative authority) bill pushed by the Democratic Party, stating that "even if students made it as a joke, it is a law that is hard to imagine being criticized."
