Mokpo City Selected for Smart Specialization Infrastructure Project Competition
Annual Support of 7.47 Billion KRW Including 5 Billion KRW National Budget from 2023 to 2025
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jeong Seunghyun] Mokpo City, Jeollanam-do, has been selected for the '2023 Smart Specialization Infrastructure Construction Project' contest hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
According to the city on the 10th, the Smart Specialization Infrastructure Construction Project is a project aimed at revitalizing local industries and the economy by enhancing and diversifying regional industrial capabilities reflecting local characteristics or transforming main industries facing crises into new industries.
The city, together with Jeollanam-do and Mokpo Maritime University Ship Repair Support Center, has been working hard to be selected for the project by visiting the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy three times since February and incorporating expert consulting opinions (hosted by the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology) into the project plan.
The newly planned task of the selected 2023 Smart Specialization Infrastructure Construction Project, titled 'Establishment of a Smart Repair, Diagnosis, and Management Support System for Small and Medium-sized Ship High-speed Engines,' will invest a total project cost of 7.47 billion KRW, including 5 billion KRW of national funding, over three years from 2023 to 2025 to advance infrastructure related to maintenance and repair of small and medium-sized ship high-speed engines and establish standard procedures for repair and diagnosis.

A city official said, "This project will build infrastructure to absorb maintenance and repair of high-speed engines installed on Coast Guard vessels locally in preparation for the opening of the Coast Guard Western Maintenance Factory, while also fostering professional manpower and creating quality jobs, thereby strengthening the competitiveness of the stagnating shipbuilding industry and greatly contributing to revitalizing the local economy."
