[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] In Shanghai, which is on the 37th day of lockdown, a doctor who declared a living person dead has been severely disciplined with license revocation. Additionally, the related officials were immediately dismissed, and an investigation is underway.
On the 3rd, Chinese media including Xinhua News Agency reported that on May 1, Labor Day, an unthinkable incident occurred at an elderly welfare center in Putuo District, Shanghai, where a living elderly person was mistakenly declared dead and moved to a funeral home.
Fortunately, the funeral home staff felt warmth from the elderly person and transferred them to a hospital. It is known that the elderly person is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
This absurd fact was revealed on the 2nd, prompting the Communist Party of China’s Discipline Inspection Commission to launch a direct investigation.
The Shanghai Discipline Inspection Commission and the Health and Hygiene Commission revoked the license of the doctor who declared the death in accordance with the "Physician Law of the People's Republic of China" that afternoon and instructed the public security authorities to investigate the case.
The Discipline Inspection Commission also immediately referred Zhang Jiandong, Party Secretary and Director of the Putuo District Civil Affairs Bureau, to the Party Discipline Commission, and dismissed related officials including Huang Yanghong, Deputy Director of the Civil Affairs Bureau, Liu Yinghua, Head of Elderly Service, and Wu Youcheng, Director of Social Work Development Office. Subsequently, the director of the Ge Fang Elderly Welfare Center was dismissed and referred to the public security authorities for investigation.
Chinese media have publicly disclosed the names of the officials involved, reflecting a highly agitated atmosphere. Amid the unrest in Shanghai’s public sentiment due to over a month of lockdown, the occurrence of such an absurd incident prompted even the Shanghai Discipline Inspection Commission to intervene.
