[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-seop] Lee Won-duk, CEO of Woori Bank, recently addressed the embezzlement incident involving approximately 60 billion KRW, urging to "rebuild the broken trust."
According to the financial sector on the 2nd, Lee Won-duk conveyed in a message to employees on the 29th of last month, "At a time when we are shedding the burden of public funds and preparing for a new leap forward, an embezzlement incident that should never have happened was discovered."
Lee stated, "Our entire family must have felt great shock and despair upon hearing the concerns from the media and society," adding, "Trust was completely shaken in an instant by one person's malicious intent and selfish crime."
He continued, "We are bankers entrusted with protecting customers' assets," emphasizing, "Customer trust is as vital as life itself." He also mentioned, "It will take more time and effort to restore customer trust."
Furthermore, he said, "The relevant employee is currently in custody, and investigations by the police and financial authorities are underway," stressing, "Depending on the investigation results, strict responsibility will be imposed not only on the individual involved but also on any additional related parties."

Employee A, belonging to the Corporate Improvement Department at Woori Bank's headquarters, is suspected of embezzling 61.4 billion KRW of company funds in three instances over six years since 2012. A was detained by the police on the 30th of last month.
