[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] National Intangible Cultural Heritage Jangdo Artisan Park Jong-gun will hold a public event titled "Passing from Hand to Hand," featuring Jangdo viewing and traditional Jangdo making demonstrations from May 5 to 7 (3 days) at the Gwangyang Jangdo Transmission Education Center.
Sponsored by the Cultural Heritage Administration's National Intangible Heritage Center and the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation, and organized by National Intangible Cultural Heritage Jangdo Artisan Park Jong-gun, the public event aims to preserve and transmit the craftsmanship of Jangdo (粧刀) and widely promote the spirit and soul of ancestors embodied in Jangdo.
At this event, over 40 pieces will be showcased, including the late first-generation Doam Park Yong-gi's work "Heukdang Geumeunjang Cheomjado," second-generation Jangdo artisan Park Jong-gun's Jangdo transformed into Najeonchilgi Jangdo from the mother-of-pearl Jangdo depicted in the portrait of Joseon Dynasty Samdosugun Tongjesa Seong-yu Lee Chang-yoon, and the "Silver Inlaid Tiger and Bamboo Jangdo."
In particular, the "Silver Inlaid Tiger and Bamboo Jangdo" is a commemorative piece created in 2022, the Year of the Black Tiger (Im In Year, 壬寅年), embodying the romance of ancestors and the spirit of scholars. It symbolizes the tiger's bravery and dignity to drive away evil spirits and expresses a wish to overcome COVID-19.
During the event, Jangdo making demonstrations and exhibition explanations will be held daily at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Park Jong-gun, the director organizing the event, stated, "I prepared this event deeply remembering my late father's teaching that when making Jangdo, one must put the artisan's soul and whole heart into it."
He added, "I hope people will experience the traditional Jangdo making techniques on-site and appreciate the beautiful Jangdo works. We ask for the public's interest and active participation."
Tak Young-hee, Director of Culture and Arts, said, "Through this public event, I hope people can glimpse the spirit of Jangdo, which contains the elegance and will of our ancestors, and that modern people will realize the value and meaning of Jangdo."
