[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Woo-seok] A hearse driver was caught by the police after stealing precious metals from a corpse.
The Gwangju Western Police Station announced on the 27th that Mr. A (30) has been booked on theft charges and is under investigation.
Mr. A is accused of stealing a gold necklace worth approximately 2.8 million won from the deceased while transporting the body from an emergency room in a hospital in Seo-gu, Gwangju, to a funeral hall on the 8th.
He took advantage of the fact that the bereaved family members did not ride in the vehicle during the transport, and after discouraging the family from removing the precious metals from the deceased just before transporting the body by saying it was "inappropriate," he stole the precious metals.
The bereaved family noticed the disappearance of the deceased’s precious metals in the funeral hall’s resting room and suspected Mr. A, but he reportedly feigned ignorance until the end.
After receiving the report, the police obtained a confession from Mr. A through medical staff testimonies and closed-circuit television (CCTV) analysis, and recovered the stolen precious metals.
The police also revealed that Mr. A had stolen a gold ring worth about 800,000 won from the deceased who had died in a house in Dong-gu on February 8.
It is reported that he went to a goldsmith shop while riding in the hearse and sold the gold ring.
Mr. A is believed to have committed the crimes for living expenses.
