LX Group Considering Acquisition of MagnaChip Semiconductor
"Various Growth Strategy Options Under Review... No Final Decision Yet"
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] It is reported that LX Group is pursuing the acquisition of MagnaChip Semiconductor, a mid-sized system semiconductor company.
According to the industry on the 26th, LX Group is currently reviewing the acquisition of MagnaChip Semiconductor, which has recently been put back on the merger and acquisition (M&A) market. An LX Group official said, "It is true that we are keeping various possibilities and options open for review as part of the group's future growth strategy," adding, "However, nothing has been finalized regarding the acquisition of MagnaChip Semiconductor."
LX Group has LX Semicon (formerly Silicon Works), a semiconductor design specialist company, as an affiliate, and it is known that the group is reviewing this acquisition to expand its attack on the rapidly growing system semiconductor market and to create synergy effects with LX Semicon.
MagnaChip Semiconductor was spun off in October 2004 when SK Hynix (then Hynix Semiconductor) restructured its non-memory division to focus on memory semiconductors. It was later acquired by Citigroup Venture Capital in the U.S., which gave it its current name. MagnaChip Semiconductor, listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), has its headquarters and production facilities in Korea, but its major shareholders are currently composed of U.S.-based hedge funds.
Last year, the Chinese private equity fund Wise Road Capital attempted to acquire MagnaChip Semiconductor for about $1.4 billion (approximately 1.7 trillion KRW), but the acquisition was ultimately blocked by the U.S. government.
