Wando-gun Welcomes First Foreign Workers... Expected to Alleviate Fishing Industry Labor Shortage
69 People Assigned to 36 Fishing Households in the District
[Wando=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Kyung-pil] Jeonnam Wando-gun announced on the 26th that it will actively promote the entry of foreign seasonal workers to address the shortage of labor in fishing households.
The county signed an agreement with Tarlac Province in the Philippines last July to introduce foreign seasonal workers, and 69 foreign seasonal workers are scheduled to arrive for the first time on the 28th.
The foreign seasonal workers arriving this time will undergo PCR testing on the day of entry, be quarantined for one day at a local quarantine facility, and upon receiving a negative result, will receive training on working conditions and be assigned to 36 fishing households in the area.
More foreign workers are expected to arrive in several subsequent phases.
Meanwhile, the foreign seasonal worker program is a system that allows the legal employment of foreigners for a short period to solve the chronic labor shortage during the farming and fishing seasons.
The county has been striving to resolve the labor shortage in rural farming and fishing areas, but has faced difficulties in securing manpower due to delays in foreign entry caused by the outbreak and spread of COVID-19.
A county official stated, “As this is the first entry through the foreign seasonal worker program, we will do our best to ensure stable operation of the system so that the chronic labor shortage in fishing households can be alleviated as much as possible.”
