Series of Explosions in Pro-Russian Region of Eastern Moldova... Allegations of Russian Provocation Raised
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] A series of explosions reportedly occurred in Transnistria, a pro-Russian region on the eastern border of Moldova. There are suspicions that Russia deliberately provoked the incident to create a pretext for invading Moldova.
According to the Associated Press on the 25th (local time), a series of explosions occurred at the National Security building in Tiraspol, the central city of Transnistria, located on the border between Moldova and Ukraine. Local police stated that the attack is believed to have been carried out using rocket-propelled grenades. No casualties have been reported yet, and the perpetrators remain unidentified.
Transnistria, with a population of about 470,000, declared independence from Moldova after the collapse of the Soviet Union and, following a war with the Moldovan government forces in 1992, is currently controlled by pro-Russian separatist forces. Legally, it is still recognized as Moldovan territory. Approximately 1,500 Russian troops are currently stationed there under the guise of peacekeepers. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began, there are concerns about the conflict expanding into Transnistria.
The governments of Moldova and Ukraine view Russia as behind this incident. The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release, "The purpose of today's incident is to create a pretext to exploit the security situation in Transnistria, a region not controlled by constitutional institutions," indirectly suggesting the possibility of Russian provocation.

The Ukrainian government called it a "planned provocation" by Russia, strongly criticizing it as a 'false flag' operation aimed at expanding military actions, similar to Russia's earlier moves in eastern Ukraine's Donbas region. According to CNN, Ukraine's Defense Intelligence Agency revealed that Transnistrian leadership had shown suspicious activity days before, such as attempting to install bunkers in buildings. The agency emphasized, "Certainly, this incident is one of the provocations orchestrated by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) to cause panic and inject anti-Ukrainian sentiment."
