Honam University Selected for 4 Consecutive Years in Food Skilled Technology Inheritance Education
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Honam University has been selected for the fourth consecutive year in the ‘2022 Food Skilled Technology Succession Education’ contest organized by the Korea Agency of Education, Promotion and Information Service in Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (EPIS), receiving a project fund of 100 million KRW to carry out the ‘Succession Project with Food Masters.’
Hosted by Honam University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation (Director Yoon In-mo), this project aims to pass on the skills and know-how of skilled professionals in the food specialty field to prospective entrepreneurs or startup founders, fostering the succession and development of specialized food technology and advancing technology in the food industry sector. It is divided into four fields: fermented sauces, traditional Korean sweets (Hangwa), traditional Korean alcoholic beverages (Eumcheongryu), and others, to cultivate specialized personnel.
Centered around the Department of Culinary Arts at Honam University (Department Head Kim Young-gyun), the project’s instructors include Gwangju City Intangible Cultural Property No. 17 holders Choi Young-ja and Min Kyung-sook, Ministry of Agriculture Food Master Oh Hee-sook, temple food expert Monk Jeong Gwan, Sim Eun, National Rice Cake Master No. 1, and Kang Deok-soon, CEO of Flowering March.
Starting with an opening ceremony in late May, the practical classes by masters, entrepreneurship education, and mentoring will be conducted over 15 sessions across five months at Honam University, the masters’ workshops, and Baekyangsa Cheonjinam, among other locations.
Professors Song Ki-hee and Lee Seung-ik of the Department of Culinary Arts stated, “This education focuses on hands-on apprentice-style training by food masters and will be conducted as practical classes for developing fermented sauce and Korean dessert products. The goal is to support students in starting food-related businesses after completing the course.”
The education is free of charge, and applicants must be young or middle-aged prospective entrepreneurs or entrepreneurs within five years of establishment, with a total of 40 participants. Graduates will receive a certificate of completion issued by the Director of the Korea Agency of Education, Promotion and Information Service in Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
