[Asia Economy Reporter Jin-ho Kim] LG AI (Artificial Intelligence) Research Institute has teamed up with Seoul National University to jointly develop a 'super-large multimodal AI.'

According to LG on the 26th, a plaque ceremony for the 'SNU-LG AI Research Center (hereinafter Research Center)' was held yesterday at Seoul National University's Gwanak Campus. The newly opened Research Center serves as a joint research hub between LG AI Research Institute and Seoul National University's AI Graduate School. Professor Kyung-Moo Lee, head of the AI major in the cooperative program at Seoul National University Graduate School, and Kyung-Hoon Bae, director of LG AI Research Institute, will serve as co-directors of the center.

The Research Center will study core technologies of super-large multimodal AI that surpass the limitations of existing super-large AI, which handles and expresses two-dimensional information such as text and images, including 3D generation technology that enables AI to autonomously create and animate three-dimensional bodies in virtual spaces.

In his greeting, Professor Kyung-Moo Lee said, “We will do our best to lead the development of the domestic AI industry at the forefront with LG AI Research Institute and to accelerate joint research for developing core technologies of super-large multimodal AI, as well as to nurture industry-friendly AI talents who will be the future leaders.”

Kyung-Hoon Bae, director of LG AI Research Institute, also said, “Together with Seoul National University, which possesses top-level AI research capabilities, we will challenge unprecedented new AI technologies and, through joint research on multimodal AI, become a globally recognized super-large AI powerhouse while also sparing no effort in nurturing outstanding talents.”

LG AI Research Institute and Seoul National University recently selected eight joint research projects to secure core technologies for super-large multimodal AI.

Notably, Professor Kyung-Moo Lee is researching 3D generation technology with LG AI Research Institute that can create the full-body shape and movements of a specific person from just a single image or a short video clip. This technology can generate powerful synergy when applied to AI humans.

For example, if this technology is applied to 'Tilda,' the AI artist LG showcased at New York Fashion Week last February, it would be possible to realize Tilda’s activities freely within the metaverse in 3D. Another joint research topic includes next-generation language models that mimic the structure of human language learning.

In addition, both parties will conduct research on AI application technologies that can be immediately applied to various industries, as well as studies on AI ethics, including bias and fairness, which are considered essential elements for AI commercialization.
