Will the Documentary on Cho Kuk, 'Geudaega Cho Kuk', Hold 100,000 Nationwide Preview Screenings?
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] The documentary film "You Are Jo Guk," which depicts the conflict surrounding the appointment of former Minister of Justice Jo Guk, reached its crowdfunding goal within three hours of launch.
On the 25th, the "You Are Jo Guk" team stated, "Currently, over 1,000 people have participated in the fundraising on the crowdfunding platform Tumblbug," adding, "We plan to continue funding until the 15th of next month, aiming for a nationwide screening of 100,000 people."
Participants will have their names credited in the digital distribution version's main screening, which will be available through VOD and DVD services. The funds will be used for venue rental fees for the screening, DVD production costs, photobook production costs, and digital distribution master work fees.
"You Are Jo Guk" covers the events that took place over 67 days from August 9, 2019, when Jo Guk was nominated as Minister of Justice, until his resignation on October 14. The film is directed by Lee Seungjun, who won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Film for "Memories of Absence," a documentary about the Sewol ferry disaster, marking the first Korean to win at the Academy Awards.
The production company said, "It deals with what was witnessed during the brutal hunt carried out by the prosecution that had lost its sense of justice. It questions whether we can be confident that the old power’s portrait, which fosters oblivion and twists the direction of democracy, the resistance to reform, and the prosecution’s blade are not aimed at us." They added, "The title means that someday someone around me could become Jo Guk."

The film will be released next month and will be unveiled at the 23rd Jeonju International Film Festival.
