Hwang Unha: "Without Complete Abolition of Prosecution's Direct Investigation, It Is a 'National Deception'"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jin-ho] On the 23rd, Hwang Unha, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, insisted that the so-called 'Complete Removal of Prosecution's Investigation Rights' (검수완박) bill, agreed upon by the ruling and opposition parties, must include the provision that "the prosecution's direct investigation rights are gradually and completely abolished."
On the same day, Hwang said on Facebook, "The core is to temporarily retain the prosecution's direct investigation rights but gradually (up to 1 year and 6 months) completely abolish them," adding, "If this key part of the agreement is not upheld, the agreement will be a public deception."
He continued, "According to reports, it is suspected that the People Power Party had no intention of honoring this part from the beginning," and emphasized, "If this part is not specified during the bill drafting process, the agreement should be considered null and void."
According to the mediation plan by National Assembly Speaker Park Byeong-seok, legislative measures for the Serious Crime Investigation Agency (중수청) must be completed within six months after the formation of the Judicial Reform Special Committee. If the Serious Crime Investigation Agency is launched within one year after the legislative measures, the prosecution's direct investigation rights will be abolished.
