UN Secretary-General to Meet Putin on 26th and Zelensky on 28th
[Asia Economy Reporter Jin-ho Kim] United Nations Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres will visit Russia and Ukraine next week to meet with President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelensky, respectively. Attention is focused on whether a point of agreement between the two countries to stop the prolonged war will be reached through Guterres' mediation efforts.
UN Deputy Spokesperson Eri Kaneko announced on the 22nd (local time) that Secretary-General Guterres will visit Moscow on the 26th to meet President Putin. According to the UN and the Kremlin, Guterres will arrive in Moscow on the 26th, hold working-level consultations with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, have lunch together, and then meet with President Putin.
Deputy Spokesperson Kaneko stated, "The Secretary-General hopes to discuss what can be done to urgently bring peace to Ukraine," adding, "The goal is to discuss immediate measures to stop the gunfire."
Secretary-General Guterres will visit Ukraine on the 28th, two days after his visit to Russia. In Ukraine, Guterres is scheduled to hold working-level talks with Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and then meet with President Zelensky.
This visit by Secretary-General Guterres was arranged after he sent letters requesting meetings to the heads of state of Russia and Ukraine through their respective permanent missions to the UN on the 19th.
Meanwhile, the war that began with Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24 continues, causing many casualties that have not been specifically confirmed. According to the UN, the number of Ukrainians who have fled abroad to escape the war has exceeded 5 million.
