Support rates for each candidate vary significantly depending on the polling organization, leaving voters unable to make sense of the conflicting poll results.
In the public opinion poll conducted by Korea Gallup on the 18th and 19th, the support rates for the Jeonnam Superintendent of Education were 32.2% for candidate Jang Seok-ung, 21.0% for candidate Kim Dae-jung, and 8.4% for candidate Kim Dong-hwan, with Jang Seok-ung leading Kim Dae-jung.
Conversely, the Daily Research poll conducted on the same dates showed support rates of 29.4% for Kim Dae-jung, 25.4% for Jang Seok-ung, and 7.1% for Kim Dong-hwan, indicating Kim Dae-jung ahead of Jang Seok-ung. The two organizations released completely opposite results on the same day.
Korea Gallup used mobile phone virtual numbers and landline RDD sample frames, while Daily Research employed both wireless and wired ARS phone surveys, selecting respondents using 91% mobile phone virtual numbers provided by telecom companies and 9% landline RDD. Both polls have a margin of error of ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
Polling experts attribute the major cause of the fluctuating results to differences in survey content and methodology.
Currently, candidates Jang Seok-ung and Kim Dae-jung are actively promoting the poll results favorable to themselves and using them to solidify their voter base.
One voter said, "My child attends school, so I am very interested in Jeonnam education. I am paying close attention to the polls, but the differing results are confusing. I believe it is up to the voters to make a judgment, so I am watching the candidates' activities."
