Park Hyeja: "Develop Healthy Eating Habits with 100-Won Lunchbox"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Park Hye-ja, a preliminary candidate for Gwangju Superintendent of Education, announced on the 21st that she will ensure no children skip breakfast through the "100-won Lunchbox," part of responsible childcare.
Park Hye-ja, a preliminary candidate for Gwangju Superintendent of Education, stated, "Breakfast during adolescence plays an important role in maintaining health," and added, "I want to take care of the health of growing children with the 100-won Lunchbox."
The "100-won Lunchbox" is an educational welfare project that provides simple breakfast meals to elementary, middle, and high school students. Schools will only provide the space, so there are no plans to increase teachers' workload.
According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, a 2020 nationwide survey on breakfast skipping rates found that 17.7% of children aged 6 to 11 and 46.2% of those aged 12 to 18 skip breakfast. This appears to be due to increased academic burdens as students advance to higher grades.
However, breakfast for growing students in elementary, middle, and high school is not only a source of energy but also used to build bones and muscles and support growth. Skipping breakfast results in insufficient energy to concentrate in class, which affects academic performance. Given the critical importance of breakfast, a program supporting a hearty meal is essential.
This "100-won Lunchbox" project will be a joint effort between local governments and education offices, with specific policies to be proposed to Gwangju mayoral preliminary candidates.
