The "World Tea Evaluation Contest" is a competition that promotes Korea's tea processing (製茶) culture to the world, marking its 10th anniversary this year.
The contest evaluates the highest quality teas produced in major tea-producing regions around the world such as China, Japan, and Sri Lanka, as well as teas made by Korean tea masters, judging their quality through evaluation.
Competitions are held in seven categories including green tea (hand-steamed, machine-steamed), black tea, yellow tea, blue tea, dark tea, and blended tea.
The evaluation contest appoints 11 domestic tea experts as judges who score the teas based on sensory evaluation methods, assessing appearance, color, aroma, taste, and brewed leaves to select the best tea.
The "Korea Tea Blending Contest" is in its 8th year and is a competition where domestic tea processors and experts blend Korean teas with herbs, fruits, oils, etc., to create the best tea that combines consumer preference and functionality.
Gold, silver, and bronze prize winners in the Korea Tea Blending Contest qualify to participate in the blending category of the World Tea Evaluation Contest.
This evaluation contest offers a total prize money of 12 million KRW. Winners of the highest awards in each category will receive ▲ Jeollanam-do Governor's Award (3 million KRW) for the hand-steamed green tea category ▲ Jeonnam Governor's Award and Boseong County Mayor's Award (1.5 million KRW each) for machine-steamed green tea, black tea, and blended tea categories ▲ Boseong County Mayor's Award (500,000 KRW) for the Korea Tea Blending category.
