Gurye-gun Appeals to Nationwide Diaspora for Yeosun Incident Victim Registration
Promotion of Report Submission Following the Enforcement of the Yeosun 10·19 Incident Special Act
Letter of Appeal from Lee Gyu-jong, Chairman of Gurye Bereaved Families Association, and Newsletter Delivered to Out-of-Area Hometown Residents
[Gurye=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yuk Miseok] On the 21st, Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that it has launched a strategic campaign targeting nationwide expatriates to actively encourage the reporting of victims of the Yeosu-Suncheon 10·19 Incident.
After review by the Gurye Newsletter Editorial Committee, the county plans to include an appeal from Lee Gyu-jong, Chairman of the Yeosu-Suncheon Uprising Gurye Bereaved Families Association, along with a guide on reporting the incident, in the second quarter newsletter to inform expatriates and related parties outside the region about the investigation and victim/family reporting of the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident.
The Gurye Newsletter is delivered not only to residents currently living in Gurye but also to expatriates scattered across the country.
Therefore, it is expected to help expatriates who suffered damage during the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident but left their hometowns and could not properly receive news, as well as descendants of the victims, to submit their reports.
Previously, Gurye-gun, with the cooperation of the Seoul Gurye-gun Expatriates Association, has been continuously providing notices about reporting Yeosu-Suncheon Incident victims through official SNS channels accessible to all expatriates and in the Guryehaksa booklet, as well as giving separate guidance during expatriate events.
Expatriates can submit reports by mail or visit not only Gurye County Office but also the Jeollanam-do Provincial Office Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Support Team, so they can report from anywhere.
Additionally, beyond existing leaflets, the county is actively developing and promoting additional promotional materials explaining the necessity of the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident, placing them in eup and myeon offices to make it easier for more people to understand and access the reporting process.
In his appeal, Lee Gyu-jong, Chairman of the Gurye Bereaved Families Association, stated, “While the Jeju 4·3 Incident Special Act was passed over 20 years ago and has begun to yield visible results such as compensation this year, the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Special Act was only passed last year after numerous twists and turns,” adding, “The Central Committee is currently reviewing ways to allow bereaved families to submit documents as simply as possible, so I hope this opportunity will be well utilized.”
Lee Gwang-dong, Acting Governor of Gurye-gun, said, “Since 74 years have already passed, we cannot delay any longer,” and “This newsletter was planned to actively reach out not only within the county but also to our local residents living outside the region.”
He continued, “I hope that during this opportunity, expatriates and descendants of victims nationwide will report their damages and soothe the 74 years of grief.”
