A man in his 30s arrested for impersonating the National Intelligence Service to extort Bitcoin investment funds
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jin-ho] A man in his 30s is under police investigation on charges of impersonating a National Intelligence Service (NIS) employee and extorting money from victims by falsely claiming to have knowledge of Bitcoin investment information.
According to the police on the 20th, the Gangdong Police Station in Seoul booked and is investigating A (31) on charges of fraud and attempted fraud on the 13th of this month. A is known to have pretended to be an NIS employee and deceived victims by claiming, "I have good knowledge of Bitcoin investment information." He is accused of embezzling 8 million won and 3 million won respectively from two women in their 30s in January this year. Additionally, on the 13th of this month, he attempted to extort 20 million won from another victim, B, using the same method.
A was caught following a report from an acquaintance of B who found the situation suspicious. Although A impersonated an NIS employee, investigations revealed that he is actually unemployed. The police plan to request an arrest warrant after investigating any additional crimes committed by A.
