Quality of 15 Herbal Ingredients in Cheongpye-tang for Cough and Phlegm Confirmed Good in 195 Tests
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Institute of Health and Environment announced on the 21st that the quality of the raw herbal medicines used in ‘Cheongpye-tang,’ a traditional Korean medicine treatment for COVID-19 proposed by the Korean Medicine Doctors Association, was found to be good after conducting quality and safety inspections.
According to the Donguibogam, Cheongpye-tang is a herbal medicine prescribed for cough, phlegm, and asthma caused by severe inflammation in the bronchi or lungs. It is mainly used in Korean medicine clinics and pharmacies to treat cough with phlegm and cough accompanied by breathing difficulties, which are representative symptoms of the Omicron variant.
The inspection targeted 195 samples of 15 types of herbal medicines that make up Cheongpye-tang, including Gilgyeong, Paemo, Bokryeong, and Geongang, which have phlegm removal effects; Hwanggeum and Chija, which are excellent at removing inflammation; and Maekmundong and Cheonmundong, which help restore bronchial and lung functions.
The quality inspection items included appearance, confirmed by visual examination with advice from expert identification committee members to verify authenticity, and the content of indicator components. The safety inspection analyzed harmful substances such as lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, sulfur dioxide, residual pesticides, mycotoxins, and benzo[a]pyrene.
