Gwangju Dong-gu Accelerates 'Clean Dong-gu' Smart Sewer Pipeline Pilot Project
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City announced that it is taking swift action by being the first among the five nationwide local governments selected in July last year for the Ministry of Environment-led ‘Smart Sewer Pipeline Pilot Project’ to hold a kickoff meeting and conduct an odor status survey.
The ‘Smart Sewer Pipeline Pilot Project’ is a key task under the government’s Korean New Deal comprehensive plan in the Green New Deal sector, aimed at ‘establishing a clean and safe water management system.’
From this year until 2024, Dong-gu plans to invest a total project cost of 16.8 billion KRW (11.8 billion KRW national funds and 5 billion KRW local funds) over three years to build a smart sewer odor management system.
To this end, in February, a kickoff meeting was held with the participation of the district office and external experts to discuss a five-year complaint analysis, thorough field surveys, and the installation of effective odor reduction facilities considering economic feasibility for future maintenance, as well as the establishment of a remote control integrated management system.
Until now, Dong-gu’s sewer structure was installed as a combined system that could cause odor generation, resulting in continuous odor-related complaints every year. Although efforts to install reduction facilities have been made since 2016 with budget allocation, the 700 million KRW project budget was limited to cover the entire Dong-gu area.
With the securing of a 16.8 billion KRW project budget through this selection, the project will sequentially proceed with the installation of odor reduction facilities integrating the latest odor reduction technology and information and communication technology (ICT), the establishment of an integrated management system capable of real-time monitoring, smart sewer odor operation and monitoring, and performance analysis.
Currently, Dong-gu is conducting a sewer odor status survey targeting areas including the Gwangju Streamside walking trail, traditional markets, and the National Asia Culture Center, where complaints frequently occur, and is preparing an odor concentration map. Based on this, the selection of odor reduction technologies for each facility and plans for ICT-linked smart system construction are being reviewed.
