Over 1.11 Million Posts on Cheong National Petitions in 5 Years... 230 Million Agreements
"Moon Administration's National Petitions Operate Until May 9"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The Blue House's National Petition platform has recorded 1.11 million posts over the past five years, with a total of 230 million people agreeing to petitions during that time.
The Blue House announced this on the 20th through the '5-Year Operation Results of the National Petition.'
The National Petition was first introduced on August 19, 2017, the 100th day of President Moon's inauguration. If a petition receives more than 200,000 agreements within 30 days, government and Blue House officials respond; there have been 284 such responses.
Over the past five years, a total of 1.11 million petitions have been posted, 516 million people have visited the petition board, and 230 million people have agreed to petitions.
Among the petitions that received more than 200,000 agreements in the past five years, there were 285 in total, with appeals related to crime and accident victims being the most common at 127 cases. Petitions related to government policies and systems numbered 71, political petitions 46, broadcasting and media-related petitions 16, and animal protection petitions 15.
Legal and institutional improvements have also been made through the National Petition. Petitions related to the 'Telegram Nth Room,' which alone had nine petitions with over 200,000 agreements, led to the establishment of the 'Government-wide Joint Digital Sex Crime Eradication Measures,' amendments to the 'Sexual Violence Punishment Act,' the 'Child and Youth Protection Act,' and the 'Information and Communications Network Act.'
Petitions demanding the transition of firefighters to national public officials became the driving force behind the amendment of six related laws, including the Firefighter Act and the Fire Basic Act.
Public evaluation has also been positive. In a public awareness survey on the National Petition system, 94% of respondents said they were aware of the National Petition, and 56.8% said it has significant positive functions. Additionally, 69% responded that the National Petition is effective in conveying public opinion to the government.
However, concerns were also raised that the National Petition excessively expresses the positions of certain groups (43.7%) and that attacks and hateful opinions against specific groups and individuals are indiscriminately expressed (41.4%).
