Say "Eco-friendly Cosmetics" Instead of "Clean Beauty"
'Simple Technology' Recommended as Alternative Term for 'Rotech'
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language recommended on the 20th that the term 'clean beauty' be replaced with the Korean term '친환경 화장품' (environmentally friendly cosmetics). Additionally, they suggested '단순 기술' (simple technology) as the Korean alternative for 'low tech.'
Clean beauty refers to cosmetics made by excluding harmful ingredients and considering environmental protection. At the New Words Meeting held on the 6th, the Ministry and the Institute reviewed the appropriateness and usability of meanings and decided on 친환경 화장품 as the replacement term. The selection also reflected survey results. In a public acceptance survey conducted from the 8th to the 14th with about 2,000 participants, 89.8% of respondents answered that the term was appropriate. 71.2% agreed on the necessity of Korean language alternatives. Low tech means a lower-level, simple, or basic technology. In this discussion, 단순 기술 was selected as the appropriate Korean term.
