Park Hyeja: "I Will Equip Talent and Character with Two Wings through Culture and Arts Education"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Park Hye-ja, a preliminary candidate for Gwangju Superintendent of Education, announced a cultural arts education policy, stating, "We will cultivate students who possess both skills and character through cultural arts education."
On the 19th, candidate Park held her seventh policy presentation at the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education briefing room and proposed a cultural arts education policy.
Candidate Park Hye-ja stated, "We will create Gwangju education that fosters proper character through humanities literacy that nurtures cultural sensitivity and concepts," adding, "We will nurture future talents who possess both skills and character."
First, cultural arts education will be conducted through the operation of the local cultural arts brand 'Kkumkki Kiwoom School,' which also aims to cultivate students' character. The 'Kkumkki Kiwoom School' policy supports student self-governance activities, after-school creative experiential activities, school-based village festivals, and regionally linked school performance groups.
Additionally, plans include operating an arts gifted education center to discover artistic talents, establishing a comprehensive arts school, and strengthening community cultural arts linkage activities through collaboration with the Korea National University of Arts.
Along with this, the previously discontinued Gwangju Student Comprehensive Arts Festival will be revived. Rather than a top-down arts festival, it will be transformed into an arts festival where students can voluntarily participate through school-level club activities, with sufficient time guaranteed for students' artistic activities.
Alongside arts education, humanities literacy will be fostered to conduct character education for students. The Gwangju-style Baccalaureate will be operated to activate classical education from both Eastern and Western traditions, reading activities, and to develop moral reasoning skills.
The ultimate goal of this policy is to cultivate students' character through cultural arts and humanities education.
Character education is the most valued virtue for students in school education. When the Korea Character Education Association asked, "What educational content should schools and teachers prioritize?" 44.8% of respondents answered "character and civic education," making it the most common response.
Park Hye-ja, preliminary candidate for Gwangju Superintendent of Education, said, "Based on the Framework Act on Education and the Act on the Promotion of Character Education, character education is an obligation that public education must fulfill," adding, "Future talents must possess character as democratic citizens along with digital thinking."
