The Gyeongnam police collaborated with the Gyeongnam branch of the Korea Deaf Association and TBN Gyeongnam Traffic Broadcasting to produce a 2-minute sign language video.
The video features police officers proficient in sign language and members of the Deaf Association simultaneously explaining traffic safety rules for pedestrians using sign language.
According to a police official, there are approximately 1,500 hearing- and speech-impaired individuals registered with the Gyeongnam branch of the Korea Deaf Association. Nationwide, it is estimated that there are 418,000 such individuals, with about 27,600 residing in Gyeongnam alone.
The police agency plans to distribute the sign language video to the Korea Deaf Association, its city and provincial branches, city and county chapters, as well as schools for the deaf, to inform hearing- and speech-impaired individuals across the country about pedestrian traffic safety rules.
