[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Former Suncheon Mayor and Democratic Party preliminary candidate for Suncheon mayor, Noh Gwan-gyu, announced that he will request a rehearing, calling the Democratic Party's cut-off decision "an absurd decision."
On the 19th, former Mayor Noh released a "Statement on the Decision of the Democratic Party Jeonnam Provincial Party Nomination Review Committee."
He said, "The Democratic Party Jeonnam Provincial Party Nomination Review Committee wrongly applied the Democratic Party's party rules and regulations to exclude me from the primary candidates," adding, "They unfairly applied penalty points for a mid-term resignation that happened over 10 years ago. I deeply regret this. I believe there is no political background behind this."
Article 100, Paragraph 1 of the Democratic Party's party rules stipulates that if a candidate has not completed three-quarters of their term to run in the relevant election, 25/100 points shall be deducted for that election.
Former Mayor Noh argued, "The rule clearly states 'the relevant election.' They retroactively applied this rule to a mid-term resignation that happened over 10 years ago, resulting in this absurd decision."
He also claimed that Article 35, Paragraph 2 of Democratic Party Regulation No. 10 states that penalty points related to mid-term resignation are not subject to retroactive application or applicable to all levels of elections.
Accordingly, he announced that he will request a rehearing to correct this violation of the Democratic Party's party rules and regulations.
The elimination of former Mayor Noh, who had been leading in suitability surveys for Suncheon mayor, in the first primary was an unexpected result.
Even when comparing candidates, many find it difficult to understand former Mayor Noh's elimination from the primary.
Citizen A pointed out, "Candidate A was sentenced to probation for clear embezzlement charges and was excluded from the nomination, yet Candidate Noh is excluded for something that happened 10 years ago. This is unfair."
Citizen B said, "Why does the candidate who ranked first in the suitability survey conducted among citizens get eliminated, while candidates ranked fourth and fifth advance to the primary? Normally, only the top three should advance to the primary."
Reactions from citizens supporting former Mayor Noh are also intense.
