[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] Amid heightened awareness due to recent wildfires causing significant damage in the Gangwon and Gyeongbuk regions, it was recently revealed that a CJ Logistics delivery driver prevented a fire that could have escalated into a major wildfire.
CJ Logistics announced on the 19th that it awarded a letter of appreciation to delivery driver Gil Hyun-cheol, who discovered a house fire in a mountainous area during delivery work and took swift initial action to prevent casualties and a wildfire. Separately, the CJ Logistics Delivery Win-Win Committee, a consultative body of delivery drivers and workers, recognized Gil’s contribution to social safety by presenting him with a commendation and a cash prize.
Gil, who has been working as a CJ Logistics delivery driver in Seongju-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do for four years, was on February 16th delivering to a residential area in the mountains when he noticed smoke rising from a yard and rushed to the fire scene.
Gil informed the fire station and the homeowner about the fire and began extinguishing the flames by filling buckets with water. He then used a fire extinguisher on hand to suppress the fire and removed nearby items that could catch fire, preventing the blaze from spreading. The fire was later completely extinguished by firefighters who arrived at the scene.
The area where the fire occurred had only about two households nearby and was sparsely populated, surrounded by hills and forested land. Without Gil’s courageous actions and prompt initial response, the fire could have easily spread into a large wildfire.
Gil Hyun-cheol said, “I didn’t do anything special; I just did what was right,” adding, “Anyone would have acted the same way in that situation.”
He also said, “This experience has made me feel a responsibility beyond just being a delivery driver, as a guardian of the neighborhood’s safety. Since the area is rural, I still follow the same delivery route every day, checking on the elderly and trying my best to help with whatever they need.”
