Candidate Lee Jeong-seon for Gwangju Superintendent of Education, Plans to Develop Life SOC School Complex Facilities
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Lee Jeong-seon, a preliminary candidate for Gwangju Superintendent of Education, announced an education cooperation policy that nurtures both Gwangju and Gwangju education together on the 18th.
Lee proposed five policies for educational cooperation on the day: ▲ Construction of 생활 SOC school complex facilities ▲ Establishment of the ‘Gwangju Education Civic Cooperation Promotion Institute’ to create a cooperative ecosystem for Gwangju education ▲ Operation of the ‘Gwangju Onmaeul School’ created together with the local community ▲ Implementation of the local business priority purchasing system ‘Bitgoeul Edu Mall’ ▲ Launch of the ‘Bitgoeul Hope Start Foundation.’
Before announcing the policies, Lee said, “The region must thrive for education to thrive, and education must thrive for the region to thrive,” adding, “To raise our children bigger, the learning space must be expanded from schools to villages and regions.”
First, he explained, “To solve the overcrowding in urban areas and the increasing demand for convenience facilities, I will make shared schools, which are 생활 SOC school complex facilities that can be shared with the village, a landmark of Gwangju education. 생활 SOC school complex facilities are complexes installed and operated within school grounds that include education, sports, culture, childcare, welfare, and public-related facilities, organically connecting schools and local communities to improve educational efficiency and secure educational space lacking in overcrowded schools.”
Regarding the establishment of the Gwangju Education Civic Cooperation Promotion Institute, he said, “It is a new form of civic cooperation model where Gwangju citizens directly participate in education to reduce school workload and improve the quality of school education. It will handle administrative tasks such as care and after-school programs, which have increased school burdens, and serve as a hub to create social jobs by connecting seniors, career-interrupted women, and local youth with schools.”
About the ‘Gwangju Onmaeul School,’ he stated, “It is village education that complements the limited educational activities at schools by taking charge of care and career education in the village. We will organically cooperate with local children’s centers, village care institutions, village education communities, and village business owners to provide children with learning, life education, psychological counseling, and career and job experience.”
Regarding the implementation of the local business priority purchasing system ‘Bitgoeul Edu Mall’ to revitalize the local economy, he emphasized, “We will enable all education office-affiliated institutions and schools to prioritize purchasing local products when buying goods, revitalizing neighborhood markets and the local small and medium-sized business economy, and contributing to the revitalization of Gwangju’s economy through Gwangju education. We will issue the ‘Gwangju Education Regional Win-Win Card,’ which can only be used in the Gwangju area and used as a corporate card, and make every effort to ensure the policy is established early through awards for excellent institutions in local business priority purchasing.”

Finally, he explained the policy, saying, “We will change the ‘Bitgoeul Meal Support Students Foundation,’ whose role has diminished due to the realization of free school meals, into a scholarship foundation (Bitgoeul Hope Start Foundation) to provide scholarships for children from low-income families and outstanding students in various fields, support multicultural students’ admission to their home country universities, cover hospital expenses for students with intractable diseases, and support musical instruments for artistic prodigies. The foundation’s operating income will come from education office contributions, corporate and individual Education Love Card savings, regular donations, and individual and group contributions, creating a virtuous cycle where Gwangju nurtures talent and talent nurtures Gwangju.”
