Jeju Air, Modurak 5th Anniversary... "Leading Employment of Disabled in Aviation Industry"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] Jeju Air announced on the 18th that ‘Modurak (樂)’, a subsidiary-type standard workplace for the disabled established to promote the employment of people with disabilities, marked its 5th anniversary on the 18th.
The name ‘Modurak’ combines the Jeju dialect word ‘Modeurak’, which means people gathering warmly in groups, and the Chinese character ‘樂’ meaning joy, conveying the meaning of ‘Let’s all enjoy together.’ It was established on April 18, 2017, as the first in the aviation industry to promote the employment of people with disabilities and provide them with stable jobs.
Currently, ‘Modurak’ employs a total of 56 full-time workers, including 50 people with visual, auditory, intellectual, and physical disabilities. Among the disabled employees working as baristas, nail artists, and massage therapists, 35 people, or 70%, have severe disabilities. 64% of the total are women with disabilities, and the workplace focuses on hiring people with severe disabilities and women with disabilities through suitable job development and customized training.
This number is nearly three times higher than the 19 disabled employees (13 severe, 6 mild) at the time of ‘Modurak’s establishment. After opening the first branch providing caf?, nail art, and healthcare services for employees and visitors, Jeju Air opened the second and third branches consecutively in 2018, creating quality jobs for people with disabilities.
In 2018, these efforts were recognized when ‘Modurak’ received the Gold Award for the ‘True Company’ certification for trusted employment of people with disabilities, hosted by the Ministry of Employment and Labor and organized by the Korea Employment Agency for the Disabled.
As of the end of last year, Jeju Air’s employment rate of people with disabilities was 3.27%, which is 0.17 percentage points higher than the mandatory employment rate of 3.1% for private companies last year. This is more than twice the 1.48% ratio of regular disabled workers in companies announced by the Korea Employment Agency for the Disabled in 2021. Especially compared to the 1.38% employment rate of people with disabilities in the air transportation sector, which includes Jeju Air, this is more than 2.4 times higher.
