Biden Faces Growing Pressure to Go to Ukraine... Zelensky Also Urges Visit
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] As the United States is reportedly considering a visit to Ukraine by a top-level official, calls for President Joe Biden to visit Ukraine are growing louder.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview with CNN on the 17th (local time), "It is a matter for President Biden to decide, but I think he will do so."
U.S. government officials revealed through local media on the 13th that the White House is discussing a plan for a top U.S. official and President Zelensky to hold talks in Kyiv. The U.S. political media outlet The Hill analyzed, "Since it was revealed that the White House is considering this, pressure for President Biden to visit Ukraine has intensified."
President Zelensky emphasized, "(Biden's visit) depends on the security situation," but added, "Since he is the President of the United States, I think he should visit Ukraine."
Since British Prime Minister Boris Johnson became the first G7 leader to visit on the 9th, Ukraine has repeatedly urged President Biden to visit. Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba also said in an interview with CBS on the same day, "President Biden's visit would send an important message of support for Ukraine," and added, "A meeting between the two leaders would pave the way for discussions that could end the conflict."
However, the White House stated that there are no plans for President Biden to visit Ukraine. White House spokesperson Jen Psaki drew a line, saying, "There are no plans to send President Biden to Ukraine."
