Gyeonggi-do Fire Department Finds 98 Out of 678 Large Construction Sites Still Suffering from Safety Negligence
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] It has been confirmed that 15% of large construction sites in Gyeonggi Province are still exposed to safety negligence, posing a risk of major accidents.
The Special Judicial Police Unit of the Gyeonggi Fire and Disaster Headquarters announced on the 18th that it conducted a first-quarter "planned investigation into unauthorized handling of hazardous materials" targeting 678 new construction sites with a total floor area of over 3,000㎡ in the province from January to March, and identified 98 large construction sites with safety negligence.
The Special Judicial Police of the Fire and Disaster Headquarters took legal action on 67 cases among them, imposed fines on 44 cases, and issued corrective orders and notified relevant agencies in 50 cases, totaling 161 actions.
Construction Site A was booked for violating the Hazardous Materials Safety Control Act after storing more than five times the designated quantity of thinner used for urethane flooring work and diesel used for indoor heating without permission.
Construction Site B was fined for violating the Firefighting Facilities Act after failing to install temporary firefighting facilities such as fire extinguishers around the area during welding and cutting work in the process of installing firefighting facility piping.
In addition, the Special Judicial Police confirmed 37 cases of violations of the Firefighting Facilities Business Act, including subcontracting without separating firefighting facility construction from other types of construction and contracting with companies without a firefighting facility business license.
Previously, the Gyeonggi Fire Headquarters deployed 74 enforcement officers in 37 teams from the headquarters and fire stations to conduct a focused planned investigation on new construction sites regarding ▲ unauthorized storage and handling of hazardous materials ▲ proper installation of temporary firefighting facilities ▲ safety measures during welding and cutting work ▲ violations of subcontracting and separate ordering.

Choi Byung-il, head of the Gyeonggi Fire Headquarters, said, "As large fires and explosions have become widespread at construction sites recently, we will continue to conduct periodic crackdowns and planned investigations to improve illegal activities," and urged, "We will strictly punish illegal firefighting safety acts that threaten the safety of residents. Construction managers and related personnel should take responsibility for fire prevention and pay more attention to safety management."
