Jung Jin-seok Appointed Head of Korea-Japan Policy Consultation Team: "National Interest Comes First"
"Yoon Given Mission to Build Future-Oriented Korea-Japan Relations"
Departs on 24th for Meetings with Foreign Ministry, Executive Branch, and National Assembly
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Hyun-ji] Jeong Jin-seok, a member of the People Power Party and the appointed head of the Korea-Japan Policy Consultation Team for President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol, expressed his determination on the 17th to "resolve Korea-Japan issues with national interest as the top priority."
Jeong conveyed the news of his appointment as head of the Korea-Japan Policy Consultation Team through Facebook, stating, "We have taken the first step to restore Korea-Japan relations that have been left in the worst condition," and added, "The mission entrusted to me by President-elect Yoon, as his special envoy, is to face the history of the two countries and build a future-oriented Korea-Japan relationship like 'Kim Dae-jung-Obuchi 2.0'." He emphasized, "Through extensive policy consultations with officials from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the administration, the National Diet, business circles, media, and academia, we will lay the groundwork for policy cooperation on issues such as North Korea's nuclear program and resolving pending Korea-Japan issues." Jeong also serves as co-chair of the Korea-Japan Parliamentary Diplomacy Forum.
He continued, "Korea-Japan relations have become deeply entangled. It is difficult for relations to suddenly improve just because a new government has taken office in the Republic of Korea," adding, "However, we cannot continue to leave the frozen Korea-Japan relations as they are. National interest will be our top priority."
