Galleria Department Store Hosts Exclusive Domestic Pop-up for Smiley's 50th Anniversary
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] Following the recently successful domestic debut of the first-ever artificial aurora show, Galleria Department Store continues its 'Happy Virus' content with a Smiley 50th Anniversary pop-up.
According to industry sources on the 17th, Galleria is hosting a pop-up store commemorating the 50th anniversary of the lifestyle brand 'Smiley' logo at its Apgujeong-dong luxury hall until the 15th of next month. During this period, the luxury hall will feature interiors utilizing the Smiley logo to create its distinctive positive atmosphere.
Smiley became known on January 1, 1972, when French journalist Franklin Loufrani used the logo on the front page of a newspaper to announce good news.
This 50th anniversary pop-up follows the principle of collaborating with one company per country worldwide, with Galleria exclusively handling the event in Korea. Overseas, the pop-up is held exclusively at flagship department stores representing each country, including Selfridges in the UK, Galeries Lafayette in France, and Nordstrom in the USA.
The pop-up store features a special logo design created for Smiley's 50th anniversary, different from the original logo. The logo design was entrusted to world-renowned artist Andr? Saraiva, famous for collaborations with Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Tiffany. The design is characterized by a graffiti-style reinterpretation of Smiley's iconic yellow color and the number '50' in the artist's unique style.
Nicholas Loufrani, CEO of Smiley, said, "We are delighted to open a pop-up store in Korea to celebrate Smiley's 50th anniversary. Although these are challenging times, we hope this pop-up encourages moments of smiles, even if just for a short while."
At the Smiley pop-up, various collaboration products with brands such as Fred Segal, Monchouchou, Towellogist, Raf Simons, Sandro, Champion, and Casetify are exclusively introduced in Korea, all centered around the Smiley logo.
Representative products include tableware co-produced with Fred Segal, a lifestyle select shop directly operated by Galleria. The new retro design combines traditional Korean patterns and European vintage tile motifs with the modern Smiley logo, consisting of four types of plates and two types of cups. Additionally, pet products from Monchouchou, including car seats, carriers, and clothing featuring the Smiley logo, as well as a high-quality set of three towels bearing the vintage Smiley logo?the first of its kind released domestically?are showcased.
Moreover, visitors can explore clothing, accessories, and lifestyle goods resulting from collaborations between Smiley and globally renowned fashion and lifestyle brands.
Within the Galleria luxury hall, Smiley-themed decorations are placed throughout the department store to embody its unique positive vibe. Neon signs and balloons featuring the Smiley logo are installed throughout the store, with a special photo wall set up on the outdoor terrace of the West 5th floor to offer a unique experience. From May onwards, other branches will also feature installations using the Smiley logo in key spaces to maximize Smiley's positive atmosphere.
