Threatening Note Saying "You’ll Die If You Park" Leads to Complaint... Police Say "He’s a Good Kid" and Protect the Suspect
Criticism Posts Continue on Cheongju Police Station Bulletin Board
[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] A netizen who received a threatening note after parking in a vacant lot next to the village hall has filed a complaint, and it has been revealed that they submitted a request to avoid the investigator due to the detective's inappropriate response.
According to the police on the 15th, complainant Mr. A visited the Cheongju Sangdang Police Station’s Audit and Human Rights Office the day before to submit a request to avoid the investigator. Currently, the Audit Office has notified the Criminal Division of the receipt and is awaiting a response. Once the procedure is complete, they plan to verify the facts with the investigator in charge based on the complaint details.
Earlier, Mr. A stated that on the 9th and 10th, he parked in a vacant lot next to the village hall located in Gaduk-myeon, Sangdang-gu, Cheongju, Chungbuk, and received a threatening note.
The note contained threatening messages such as "Please move your vehicle elsewhere," "I have killed someone and been to prison. I have nothing left to lose. I politely ask you not to park in front of my house again. If you do, everyone will die," and other intimidating phrases.
Eventually, Mr. A filed a complaint against the note’s author.
However, on the 14th, a post titled "I am the complainant in the murder convict parking threat case. Here is the progress so far" was uploaded on an online community.
According to the post, Mr. A received a call from the investigator on the morning of the 12th, before submitting the complaint. He said, "I felt suspicious during the call. It was not reasonable that the police officer said the internet post had become a hot topic and that they were calling the author first," and added, "I judged that they had already gone to the scene and contacted the perpetrator."
Later that afternoon, Mr. A visited the police station to submit the complaint and met the investigator he had spoken to in the morning. However, the investigator raised his voice at Mr. A, saying, "Why did you post on the internet? Do you know how noisy this has become? The higher-ups are furious," and "Don’t post on the internet anymore," as if scolding a child.
During the investigation, the investigator also said, "He’s a good kid. Since that accident, he hasn’t caused any trouble for years," and "He’s good at kendo. Maybe he was a player or something."
Furthermore, when Mr. A tried to apply for protection for his spouse by phone, the investigator discouraged him, saying, "Don’t go that far, (the perpetrator) isn’t that kind of person. I also threatened him."
Afterward, the investigator informed Mr. A that the perpetrator’s side was planning to sue for defamation or said things like, "It would be better if you both just let this slide as nothing, why make it a muddy fight like this?"
