Gwangju Seo-gu Awarded 'Excellence Prize' at Korea Green Climate Awards
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shin Dong-ho] Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 14th that it won the Excellence Award in the local government category of the '2022 Korea Green Climate Awards' hosted by the National Assembly Climate Change Forum.
Now in its 12th year, the 'Korea Green Climate Awards' is the nation's first comprehensive climate change award established in 2010 to encourage organizations or individuals who have made significant contributions to nationwide climate change response and the promotion of a green nation, and to spread exemplary cases.
Seo-gu has declared the 'Climate Crisis Emergency Action' to resolve to take joint action against the climate crisis and has been steadily working to promote renewable energy and improve energy efficiency through the installation of solar power in public and private sectors, construction of fuel cell power plants, and installation of standby power cut-off devices in public institutions.
Through the Low Impact Development Green Rainwater Infrastructure project to reduce non-point source pollution, Seo-gu has laid the foundation as a leading water circulation city and established carbon-neutral infrastructure by creating green spaces to reduce fine dust and absorb greenhouse gases.
As a result, Seo-gu was selected as an award-winning institution through preliminary and final evaluations conducted over a month-long public contest from January 3.
The Green Climate Awards judging committee stated, "Seo-gu established a comprehensive plan for a carbon-neutral city tailored to the region and took the lead in solar power distribution and hydrogen charging station installation through the 2045 carbon neutrality declaration," adding, "Efforts to respond to climate change, such as creating a resource-recycling city and a water circulation city through low impact development, were remarkable."
A Seo-gu official said, "Seo-gu will continue to play a leading role in reducing greenhouse gases and responding to climate change, and will make greater efforts to realize a sustainable and resource-circulating carbon-neutral city Seo-gu."
Meanwhile, the award ceremony for this year's Korea Green Climate Awards, to celebrate the winners and share achievements in climate change response activities, was held at the National Assembly Members' Office Building, Conference Room 1, on the same day.
A total of 16 winners from six fields including public, local government, corporate, media, education, and citizens were awarded.
