Airport security screening time reduced from 37 seconds to 7 seconds... Establishment of the 3rd Basic Aviation Security Plan
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Tae-min] Advanced equipment that allows security screening to be completed in just 7 seconds without having to take laptops or liquids out of bags before boarding a plane will be introduced.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced the "3rd Basic Aviation Security Plan" containing this information on the 12th. The Basic Aviation Security Plan is a statutory plan established every five years to prevent illegal activities at airport facilities, air navigation safety facilities, and onboard aircraft, and to ensure the security of civil aviation.
This plan includes four strategic goals and 31 detailed implementation tasks: establishing a preventive aviation security system, innovating aviation security technology such as advanced equipment development, providing user-centered security screening services, and strengthening global leadership.
Security screening services will be reorganized to be user-centered by 2027. With equipment development, security screening will be completed even while walking. There will be no need to take laptops or liquids out of bags, reducing the average screening time from 37 seconds to 7 seconds. The government plans to invest 121.3 billion KRW over the next five years to introduce advanced security equipment.
By 2023, aviation security information dispersed across government and related agencies will be integrated, and supervision activities and security incident statuses, currently managed in written form, will be digitized to respond to cyber threats. Based on this, an aviation cybersecurity response strategy will be established to prevent terrorism and cyberattacks in advance, and a risk assessment and management system will be built.
Aviation security technology, including advanced equipment development, will be innovated with a target year of 2025. A plan for aviation security technology innovation will be prepared to create a security screening environment for new transportation modes such as Urban Air Mobility (UAM). 49.9 billion KRW will be invested over five years in developing security screening equipment utilizing advanced technology, and drone detection and tracking systems will continue to be installed at major airports such as Gimpo and Gimhae by 2026, along with plans to neutralize illegal drones.
Additionally, to enhance passenger convenience, mutual recognition of security levels with foreign aviation authorities such as the United States will be expanded by 2026, including exemptions for transit passengers and transshipment baggage screening and simplification of boarding procedures.
