[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] The Sudokwon Landfill Site Management Corporation announced on the 11th that it is planning to create a 36-hole golf course at the Second Landfill Site in Seo-gu, Incheon, where waste landfill has been completed.
The Second Landfill Site, covering 3.78 million square meters (1.14 million pyeong), is a site where 80 million tons of waste were landfilled from October 2000 to 2018.
The Landfill Site Corporation plans to begin the final covering work at the Second Landfill Site starting in 2024. Considering that the detailed design will take two years, it has allocated 836 million KRW in the first supplementary budget this year.
Incheon City is reviewing the Second Landfill Site as an ecological park and sports recreation complex in the '2040 Incheon Urban Basic Plan' and the 'Northern Region Comprehensive Development Plan,' and local residents around the landfill prefer a golf course that contributes to job creation and revitalization of the local economy.
Accordingly, the corporation plans to submit a proposal to the April Operations Committee to develop the Second Landfill Site into an ecological pesticide-free golf course, reflecting both Incheon City's plans and local residents' opinions.
If the golf course development at the Second Landfill Site proceeds as planned, two golf courses will be operated at the Sudokwon Landfill Site. The First Landfill Site, where waste landfill was completed, has been operating the 36-hole 'Dream Park CC' since 2013.
Since its opening, Dream Park CC has generated revenue of 111.3 billion KRW from entrance fees and 22.1 billion KRW from cart rentals, totaling 140.2 billion KRW, and has spent 134 billion KRW. Of the expenditures, 12.7% (16.9 billion KRW) was used for creating jobs for residents, helping neighbors in need, and operating community sports facilities.
