Gyeonggi-do Selects Gunpo Dundae Church and Others as 'Provincial Registered Cultural Heritage'
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Modern cultural heritage sites such as Gunpo Dundae Church in Gyeonggi-do, the old Sorae Salt Warehouse in Siheung, and the Geunhwa Changga Volume 1 have been selected as registered cultural properties of Gyeonggi-do.
Gunpo Dundae Church, located in Dundae-dong, Gunpo City, was built in 1936 during the Japanese colonial period. It is a small hanok with an area of 53㎡ that serves a religious function. It was recognized for its value as it well demonstrates the characteristics of an eclectic modern hanok combining traditional Korean and Western architectural features, and for being used as a space for rural enlightenment movements.
The old Sorae Salt Warehouse in Siheung consists of two salt warehouses preserved in the Siheung Gaetgol Ecological Park. It is a precious modern heritage remaining in a situation where most relics and artifacts related to the large-scale solar salt production site of Sorae Salt Field have disappeared.
The Geunhwa Changga Volume 1, held by the Korean Modern and Contemporary Music Museum in Pyeongtaek City, is a collection of songs banned from publication and distribution by the Japanese Governor-General of Korea during the colonial period for allegedly promoting national consciousness or patriotism, which was considered to disrupt public order or morals. It contains seven songs including "Pride of Joseon," "Eulji Mundeok," and "Gang Gam-chan," and is highly valued from the perspective of Korean music history for its lyrical and enlightenment song characteristics.

Unlike traditional cultural heritage managed as national and city/provincial designated cultural properties, Gyeonggi-do has been selecting registered cultural properties since last year to manage modern cultural heritage that lacks proper protection methods if it fails to be designated as national registered cultural properties. Eleven items, including the first registered item, the "Korean War Refugee Taegeukgi," have been registered.
