President-elect Yoon in Final Deliberations on Prime Minister Appointment... Also Discussing Draft of National Agenda
Possible Announcement After Jeju 4·3 Victims Memorial Ceremony on the 3rd... Detailed Coordination of National Tasks to Begin Next Week
[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] The Presidential Transition Committee (PTC) has officially begun work to refine the draft of the new government's national agenda. President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol has also started his final deliberations over the appointment of the first Prime Minister and Cabinet of the new administration during the weekend.
According to the PTC on the 2nd, President-elect Yoon and the committee are conducting internal coordination ahead of the appointment of the Prime Minister and Cabinet members. Discussions are taking place in completely private schedules, with meetings by subcommittees and some secretariat groups reportedly ongoing.
In particular, it is known that President-elect Yoon has narrowed down the candidates for Prime Minister to two: former Prime Minister Han Deok-su and former Financial Services Commission Chairman Lim Jong-ryong, and is in the final stages of consideration. Internally, it has been confirmed that the direction is leaning toward nominating former Prime Minister Han as the inaugural Prime Minister candidate. However, regarding the Prime Minister appointment, President-elect Yoon said the day before, "I have not met with any of the candidates who are being mentioned yet," and when asked about some speculation that the Prime Minister candidate would be announced around the 3rd, he responded, "Well, let's wait and see."
Some expect that President-elect Yoon will announce the Prime Minister candidate after attending the Jeju 4.3 Victims Memorial Ceremony on the 3rd and returning to Seoul. Following this, President-elect Yoon plans to nominate ministerial candidates for each department based on recommendations for the Prime Minister candidate.
Work to refine the draft of the national agenda is also underway. At the plenary meeting scheduled for the 4th, the highest priority national agendas collected by each subcommittee will be shared. Currently, the Planning and Coordination Subcommittee is compiling the draft national agendas prepared by each subcommittee. Starting next week, based on this draft, inter-subcommittee consultations, coordination within the policy subcommittee, and adjustments to the national agenda levels will continue.
