President Moon: "The Sea, an Indispensable Habitat for Life... We Must Coexist"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] President Moon Jae-in stated on the occasion of the 11th 'Fishermen's Day' that "the sea is an indispensable habitat for us, and we must coexist with it."
President Moon said in a social network service (SNS) message, "Our tidal flats absorb the equivalent of 110,000 cars' worth of carbon dioxide every year."
He emphasized that he established systems to solve marine waste problems such as the 'Fishing Gear Deposit System' and the 'Fishing Gear Collection System,' and strengthened fishing gear management by enacting the 'Fisheries Byproduct Act,' which enables the recycling of oyster shells, stating, "We will protect the marine environment to benefit both humans and nature."
President Moon expressed gratitude to fishermen who have continued their work despite COVID-19. He said, "Over the past year, which was particularly difficult due to COVID-19 and high water temperatures, fishermen braved the sea breeze and rough waves to provide 3.82 million tons of seafood on our tables," adding, "I offer my deep respect and gratitude to each of the 940,000 fishermen who have cultivated the sea."
