Gwangju Mayor Candidate Kang Ki-jung Promises 'Peace' with 10-Year-Old Ukrainian Girl
"Measures to Provide Institutional Support for the Settlement of Koryoin Communities"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Kang Gijeong, a preliminary candidate for mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City, met a 10-year-old Koryoin girl who fled alone due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and promised "peace."
He also listened to the difficulties faced by Koryoin compatriots from Ukraine and discussed solutions together.
On the afternoon of the 31st, Candidate Kang met Nam Anita, the 10-year-old granddaughter of Nam Ruija (56), a Koryoin resident from Ukraine, in the Koryoin Village of Wolgok-dong, Gwangsan-gu.
Nam Anita lived in Ukraine but fled due to Russia's invasion. After crossing the borders of Romania and Hungary and enduring an unstable refugee life, she set foot on Korean soil on the 22nd with the help of the Gwangju local community, where her grandmother Nam Ruija resides.
Nam Anita said, "While I was in Ukraine, I couldn't sleep well, but after coming to Korea, I was able to sleep deeply," and added, "I think peace is living with family and playing with friends. I hope there is no terrible war."
In response, Candidate Kang said, "It must have been very difficult for a child to leave her war-torn hometown and come to Korea alone. I hope she stays strong and well while in Gwangju," and promised, "I hope she can reunite with her family and friends as soon as possible. We will do our best efforts locally."

He also stated, "As someone who served as the Senior Secretary for Political Affairs at the Blue House under the Moon Jae-in administration, even if the government takes a confrontational stance against Russia, we must help Ukraine," and added, "Citizens' interest and support for Ukraine must continue. We will thoroughly research and prepare institutional support measures so that Koryoin compatriots can settle in Gwangju."
