Chairman Jeon Chang-gon: It's Time to End the Division and Strife Politics of Mayor Kwon Oh-bong
Jeonnam CBS Poll Results Show 18% Higher Support for Restoring Yeoseo Government Building
Minseon 7th Term's 'Main Building Annex Expansion' Seen as One-Way Approach and Conflict-Inducing Administration
[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Jeonnam CBS commissioned the polling agency Jowon C&I to conduct a survey of 528 voters in the Yeosu area on the 19th and 20th. Along with the ‘Democratic Party Yeosu mayoral candidate support survey,’ a local issue poll showed that 54.5% supported ‘restoring the second government building, Yeoseo Government Building,’ while 36.2% supported ‘expanding the annex of the main government building.’ This indicates that public opinion favors restoring the second government building, Yeoseo Government Building, by 18.3% more than expanding the annex of the main government building.
The ‘expansion of the annex of the main government building’ project was a key local issue that the 7th term civilian government of Mayor Kwon Oh-bong of Yeosu has been pushing for two years, which intensified conflicts within the region and led to sharp confrontations between the city government and the city council.
Regarding this, Jeon Chang-gon, chairman of the Yeosu City Council, stated in a position paper on the 29th, “Mayor Kwon Oh-bong unilaterally pushed forward the annex expansion project of the main government building, worth over 40 billion won, without undergoing a shared property management plan or economic feasibility review. In this process, he shifted the responsibility onto the city council and some local political circles, and eventually pressured the city council by proposing to decide this critical local issue through a public opinion poll, demonstrating the end of a push-through style administration.”
“This act distorts the civic spirit of the Samrye integration, divides Yeosu into old Yeosu and old Yeocheon, exacerbates discord and division, and results in a sharp confrontation between the region and citizens under the pretext of government building integration,” he added.
Chairman Jeon continued, “Nevertheless, Mayor Kwon Oh-bong declared his intention to run for re-election as Yeosu mayor and pledged the ‘expansion of the annex of the main government building’ as a campaign promise, stating he would be evaluated by the citizens. This shows that he is using the annex expansion project strategically for political gain in his re-election bid rather than for regional balanced development and citizen harmony. Since the recent public opinion poll results are completely opposite to Mayor Kwon’s claims, this should be regarded as a stern demand from citizens to stop the unilateral push-through administration without public discussion and to move toward communication and cooperation.”
Finally, Chairman Jeon stated, “I expect Mayor Kwon Oh-bong to take responsible actions by stopping divisive and confrontational politics and going through sufficient public discussion processes.”
