Creation of 'Exhibition Space' at Suwon Station Red-Light District... Opening After May
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] The red-light district around Suwon Station in Gyeonggi Province has been transformed into an exhibition and community space, which will be open to the public after May.
On the 29th, Suwon City announced that it remodeled a single-story 54.38㎡ building formerly used as a sex work establishment within the closed Suwon Station red-light district into "Memory Space It-da," equipped with exhibition and community facilities.
The city erected a sign in front of the building with the phrase "An alley returning with a changed appearance, becoming a link between the past and the future." After developing exhibition content and completing preparations, the city plans to open the space after May.
A city official stated, "Memory Space It-da will be a symbolic space to remember the past and announce a new beginning," adding, "We will also refresh the surrounding streets to create a space where citizens can visit comfortably anytime."
The Suwon Station red-light district developed into a brothel area in the 1960s as makeshift houses for prostitution were established one by one in Godeung-dong and Maesan-ro 1-ga, where Suwon Station and the bus terminal were located.
In January 2019, Suwon City established the Suwon Station Street Maintenance Promotion Team, and starting from January last year, began construction of a fire road within the red-light district. Amid growing calls for closure, all sex work establishments voluntarily shut down on the night of May 31 of the same year.
Currently, roads are being constructed and new buildings are being erected in the area.
