[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) erected a marker stone at 458 Gongdeok-dong, the birthplace of Doctor Kim Ik-sang, and held a commemorative ceremony on the 28th.
The event, hosted by the Mapo Cultural Center (Director Choi Jae-hong) and the Kim Ik-sang Memorial Marker Establishment Promotion Committee, was organized to mark the 100th anniversary of Kim Ik-sang's Shanghai Huangpu Port Incident.
Kim Ik-sang was an independence activist who joined the Uiyeoldan during the Japanese colonial period, threw a bomb at the Japanese Governor-General of Korea in 1921, and carried out the Shanghai Huangpu Port Incident in 1922 by shooting Army General Tanaka Giichi.
At the commemorative ceremony, Yoo Dong-gyun, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, "This marker stone will serve as an opportunity to deeply engrave in our hearts the noble spirit of Kim Ik-sang, who was born and raised in Mapo and stood against Japanese imperialism," delivering a congratulatory message.
Seong Jang-hyun, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, attended a memorial ceremony at the Hyochangwon Cemetery at 11 a.m. on the 26th to commemorate the 112th anniversary of the martyrdom of An Jung-geun.
The memorial ceremony, hosted by the An Jung-geun Memorial Project Association and the An Jung-geun Peace Research Institute, proceeded with the national anthem, reading of An Jung-geun’s last will, memorial speeches, memorial performances, and incense offerings.
Mayor Seong Jang-hyun said, "When I recall An Jung-geun’s lofty spirit and resolute will, who dreamed not only of national independence but also of peace in Asia and the world, my heart burns with emotion. We have yet to find his remains, and thus have not fulfilled his last wish to be returned to his homeland once national sovereignty is restored. Until the day he rests peacefully in his homeland, we must devote all our efforts to recovering his remains."
Since 2017, Yongsan-gu has held memorial events on February 14, the date of An Jung-geun’s death sentence, in cooperation with Sookmyung Women’s University. The district has also been steadily promoting projects to preserve the memory of patriotic martyrs, including the construction of the Lee Bong-chang History Echo Hall, the Yu Gwan-sun Memorial Monument, and memorial ceremonies.
In the year marking the 103rd anniversary of the Provisional Government’s establishment, Yongsan will hold a proclamation ceremony declaring itself the "City of Patriotic Martyrs" on April 12, with a commemorative week starting April 11 to highlight its identity as a city imbued with the spirit of independence activists.
During the commemorative week, plays, exhibitions, and speech contests will be held to reexamine the seven martyrs buried at Hyochangwon as well as Yongsan heroes such as Yu Gwan-sun and Kim Sang-ok. In particular, a special exhibition on independence activist Choi Jae-hyung, who supported independence movement funds from the Russian Far East and participated in the struggle, will be organized to offer visitors an opportunity to reflect on his Petchika spirit.
Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, went on a riverside exploration around Anyangcheon with local residents on the morning of the 28th.
On this day, Mayor Chae inspected the Anyangcheon walking trail and the comprehensive sports belt facilities, explored the riverside park stretching from the Reed Baseball Field to Yangpyeong Station with village narrators and local residents, and listened to various opinions regarding the maintenance of Anyangcheon and the expansion of convenience facilities.
