The forum, held at the Wando Life Culture Center performance hall, was attended by about 50 people including environmental conservation experts, public institutions, and officials from Jeollanam-do, discussing coastal ecosystem conservation and restoration projects.
The forum featured presentations by Baek Seung-ho, senior researcher at the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, on ‘Basic Plan for Restoration of the Estuary of Bunan Lake in Cheonsuman and Marine Environment Analysis,’ and Professor Jeon Seung-soo of Chonnam National University on the theme ‘Dreaming of a New Future for Sanae.’
In particular, through the case of reclamation in the Netherlands that overcame harsh natural conditions, various improvement measures for reclamation projects such as coastal wetlands and mudflats on the Korean Peninsula were presented, attracting the attention of attendees.
Shin Woo-cheol, Wando County Governor, said, “The necessity of Sanaeho reclamation and the problems at fishery production sites have long been ongoing issues to be resolved,” adding, “Wando County’s goal is to prepare measures against regional extinction by revitalizing eco-friendly seafood production and aquaculture industry through ecosystem restoration, and to restore the surrounding local governments to the past clean sea areas together.”
Chairman Lim Young-tae said, “The goal and purpose of promoting Sanaeho reclamation is to restore the sea ecosystem by returning it to its original natural state,” adding, “It aims to revitalize the marine seafood industry and aquaculture industry in a nature-friendly and eco-friendly way, and ultimately to create an era where natural ecosystem restoration prevents regional extinction and fisheries synergize with marine industries.”
He continued, “Nature itself is a resource and competitiveness. Based on this, we will create new jobs along with the seafood food industry and marine healing industry,” adding, “The small sphere launched from the sea capital Cheonghaejin Wando, the ‘Sanaeho Reclamation Forum,’ will be a blessing to the three sides of the Korean Peninsula.”
