UN Security Council Holds Open Meeting on North Korea's ICBM... Discusses Strengthening Sanctions Against North Korea
[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) held an open meeting regarding North Korea's intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test launch and began discussions on strengthening sanctions against North Korea.
The UNSC held an open meeting on the afternoon of the 25th (local time) at the Security Council chamber at the UN Headquarters in New York to address North Korea and non-proliferation issues.
This meeting was convened at the request of six countries, including the permanent members of the Security Council such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and France, as well as Albania, Ireland, and Norway, to discuss North Korea's ICBM launch.
This is the first open meeting held by the Security Council on North Korean missile issues in over four years since November 2017.
These six countries pointed out that North Korea's ICBM launch is a clear violation of the UN sanctions resolutions against North Korea. Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US Ambassador to the UN, stated, "The Security Council must unanimously condemn North Korea's illegal actions and exert pressure for North Korea to return to the negotiating table," advocating for the strengthening of additional sanctions.
Meanwhile, the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) also issued a statement on the same day strongly condemning North Korea's ICBM test launch.

The G7 said, "The missile tests conducted this year are blatant violations of UN Security Council resolutions," and added, "We urge North Korea to fully implement UN Security Council resolutions and respond to repeated dialogue proposals from the United States, South Korea, and Japan." They also emphasized that "North Korea must make a ‘complete, irreversible, and verifiable’ abandonment of its weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile development programs."
