The Transition Committee Reaffirms 'Abolition' in Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Briefing... "Progressive Reorganization"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyemin] The Presidential Transition Committee (Transition Committee) reaffirmed its stance on abolishing the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family (MOGEF) on the 25th, using the term "progressive dissolution" following the ministry's work report.
The Social Welfare and Culture Subcommittee of the Transition Committee received a work report from MOGEF at the Transition Committee office in Tongui-dong, Jongno-gu, on the afternoon of the 25th. The meeting was attended by Subcommittee Chair Im Ija, transition committee members, and expert and working-level committee members. From MOGEF, directors and others presented the report.
The work report reportedly lasted less than an hour. In comparison, work reports from other ministries typically took about two hours.
At the work report session, the Transition Committee listened to the ministry's position on the progressive reorganization of MOGEF. However, after the session, Chair Im told reporters, "(The ministry's position) cannot be disclosed yet because discussions among the committee members have not been finalized," adding, "We will gather opinions through many dialogues and meetings with women's organizations and gradually organize them."
Chair Im added, "The reorganization of MOGEF is not an easy issue as it also requires discussions with the Planning and Coordination Subcommittee," and "We plan to meet with all major women's organizations starting with the largest ones if they apply." Regarding the criticism that the work report was shorter compared to other ministries, she responded, "Since MOGEF has the smallest budget among ministries, the volume of the work report was considerably less."
Earlier, Transition Committee spokesperson Shin Yonghyun stated, "The ministry will not remain under the name of MOGEF," and explained, "There are various options such as dividing the current tasks among several other ministries, or creating a new government organization that can replace or work integratively with MOGEF, but no concrete discussions have taken place yet."
Meanwhile, MOGEF reported to the Transition Committee on support measures for dual-income couples' childcare, stabilization of living and enforcement of child support for single-parent families, and customized support plans for children of multicultural families. Specifically, the report covered ▲ expansion of government support for childcare services ▲ introduction of qualification management systems for public and private childcare providers ▲ expansion of child-rearing support for single-parent families ▲ sanctions against intentional child support debtors and plans for government advance payment of child support.
Additionally, the ministry reported on establishing an integrated support system where the state proactively reaches out to out-of-school youth, strengthening support for youth outside the home and expanding shelters, and customized support for youth receiving care alone.
Furthermore, as measures to respond to power-based and digital sex crimes, domestic and dating violence, and stalking crimes, the ministry proposed ▲ establishment of a victim-centered one-stop response system ▲ nationwide expansion of digital sex crime victim support centers ▲ prevention of secondary damage to minor sexual violence victims.
