Seoul Landmarks, Public Facilities, and Cultural Heritage Sites to Turn Off Lights for 1 Hour
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul City announced on the 25th that it will participate in the global lights-off campaign ‘2022 Earth Hour’ for one hour starting at 8:30 PM on the 26th.
The ‘Global Lights-Off’ event began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, and is now held in 190 countries worldwide. Seoul City has participated since 2008 under the auspices of the Korea World Wildlife Fund, marking its 15th year of participation this year.
This year’s Earth Hour campaign, themed “Shape Our Future,” will include online lights-off pledges and non-face-to-face running events that citizens can participate in.
Seoul City will simultaneously turn off the lights of Seoul landmarks such as Seoul City Hall, Han River bridges, Namsan Seoul Tower, Sungnyemun Gate, the National Assembly Building, Lotte World Tower, and the 63 Building. Large buildings, department stores, hotels, and large shopping malls will be encouraged to participate in the lights-off. Additionally, commercial buildings, apartments, and general residences will voluntarily participate by turning off indoor and outdoor lighting as well as landscape and signboard lights.

Citizen participation events include online lights-off pledges and a non-face-to-face running campaign (Earth Hour Run). Yoon Jae-sam, Director of the Environmental Citizen Cooperation Division of Seoul City, said, “We hope that citizens’ participation in turning off lights for one hour will provide an opportunity to reflect on the connection between the climate crisis, nature, and biodiversity, and to empathize with the impact of destroyed nature on our lives.” He added, “We ask for active participation in the online events.”
