False and exaggerated advertisements promoting health functional foods as medicines effective for joint health targeting the elderly online have been detected.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced on the 24th that it inspected 172 online posts using the phrase "joint health" from the 3rd to the 10th of last month and found violations in 29 cases, requesting the blocking of posts and administrative actions.
The main violations included 17 cases where health functional foods were promoted with content different from what was previously reviewed, 7 cases advertising efficacy in disease prevention or treatment, and 5 cases where the names of health functional foods included terms like "joint medicine," causing confusion with pharmaceuticals.
The Ministry explained that since the main customer base for joint health functional foods is the elderly, many false and exaggerated expressions were also found during telephone guidance for products sold online. Cases were confirmed where specific ingredients were claimed to have "excellent anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects," or statements like "cartilage injections are unnecessary," and "even without cartilage, surgery is not needed" were used to induce consumers to purchase products.

A private advertising verification group composed of medical professionals, consumer organizations, and academic experts emphasized, "Health functional foods should be consumed with the understanding that they are different from medicines intended for disease prevention or treatment," and added, "For the treatment of joint pain, deformities, and other diseases, it is necessary to consult a specialist from the early stages of symptoms and proceed with accurate diagnosis, examination, and appropriate treatment."
