View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) held an on-site briefing session for residents at major district administration project sites attracting public interest at 3 p.m. on the 23rd.
The briefing session, attended by about 60 residents including Nowon-gu Mayor Oh Seung-rok, was organized to address residents' questions on large-scale development projects that could change the status and structure of the area directly at the sites.
On that day, the session proceeded by sequentially visiting the sites of ▲ Gwangwoon University Station Area Development Project ▲ Bio Medical Complex Construction Project ▲ Baeksa Village Redevelopment Project to inspect the locations and share development plans.
These projects are large-scale development initiatives regarded as a stepping stone for Nowon, which had remained a bedroom community for 30 years, to leap forward as a future innovative growth city. Since the project plans were announced, they faced long-term difficulties but have now entered the main track, leading to many requests for sharing the outcomes and future plans.
The first site visited was the Gwangwoon University Station Area complex development project site. In December last year, the dismantling of a 40-meter-high cement silo on the logistics site near Gwangwoon University Station began, marking the official start of the project. The Gwangwoon University Station Area development project is a construction project to develop commercial facilities, luxury residential facilities, and public facilities on the 140,816㎡ logistics site around the station. A landmark building up to 49 floors will be constructed, along with hotels, office facilities, and commercial facilities, creating a new economic hub with job creation and a large commercial district.
The project is scheduled to start construction in the second half of this year and be completed by 2026.
Resident Bang Hyo-gil, who attended the briefing, said, “Expectations for the Gwangwoon University Station Area development project are high,” and added, “Above all, I hope the development benefits will be prioritized for Nowon-gu residents.”
Next, the site for the relocation of the Driver’s License Test Center and Vehicle Depot was viewed from the rooftop of the district office main building. The approximately 75,000-pyeong site, where the Dobong Driver’s License Test Center and Changdong Vehicle Depot have moved, plans to attract world-class pharmaceutical companies and medical research institutions centered around Seoul National University Hospital, along with hotels and commercial complexes.
Mayor Oh said that when the relocation of the vehicle depot and others is completed and full-scale construction begins in 2025, about 80,000 jobs are expected to be created, and that this will be an opportunity for Nowon-gu to transform into a self-sufficient city with quality jobs and its own growth engine.
The last site visited was Baeksa Village in Junggye-dong. Once called Seoul’s last hillside village, Baeksa Village is transforming into a luxury residential complex where Seoul’s past and present coexist. Designated as a redevelopment maintenance zone in 2009, the project plan was delayed for a long time but was approved last year.
Baeksa Village is characterized by nine architects designing various apartments and general houses with different floor counts, appropriately mixed to preserve the natural landscape and partially conserve the existing terrain so that the past and present coexist. In the general housing area, the form of alleyways is maintained, and an exhibition hall preserving the area's history will be established. Apartments will range from 5 to 20 floors with exclusive areas varying from 59 to 190㎡. The Baeksa Village redevelopment project is scheduled to start construction in September next year and be completed in the second half of 2026.
At the event, Nowon-gu Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “Since the long-awaited project by residents has begun to gain momentum, and residents’ interest and expectations are high, we brought them to the site,” adding, “As this project will build the growth foundation responsible for Nowon’s 100-year future, we will carry it out more perfectly and return the project results to the residents.”
The Nowon-gu major district administration project on-site briefing session is scheduled to be held once more at 2:10 p.m. on April 1.
Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) held an award ceremony and meeting for outstanding members of the Nowon Bicycle Safety Patrol at 3 p.m. on the 24th in the large auditorium on the 2nd floor of the district office.
Last October, the district recruited and operated the Bicycle Safety Patrol to create a bicycle-friendly environment by allowing residents who use bicycles to directly inspect bicycle-related environments and report inconveniences.
Over the past six months, the Bicycle Safety Patrol contributed greatly to creating a safe cycling environment by performing a total of 419 volunteer activities related to ▲ abandoned bicycles ▲ inspection of bicycle facilities ▲ inconveniences on bicycle roads.
The event was organized to award outstanding volunteers and explore future activity directions through a meeting.
The event was attended by about 30 patrol members including Mayor Oh Seung-rok, proceeding with activity reports, award presentations, and group discussions.
